It’s time for a nature reset!
The wizards of Wizard Within are putting on their workout shoes and bringing their binoculars for a nature walk at Taman Alam Kuala Selangor!
On the 11th of February, with the guidance of our friends from Nature Classroom, we went into the mangrove to learn more about fascinating wetland critters and forestry! We arrived just after lunch and excitedly began our walk throughout the park. The park was located at the Kuala Selangor River and oversaw the Strait of Malacca from afar. The streams that flowed through the park created a rich environment for all sorts of animals! The biodiversity changed the closer we go to the water; meaning we saw monkeys near the entrance but as we kept walking, woodpeckers, herons, and brahminy kites were nearer to the water! We were also lucky enough to see monitor lizards swimming, otter footprints, and all sorts of crabs, mudskippers, and snails peeking from the muddy shores!
The trees and plants were also very impressive. We many types of mangrove trees and learnt what makes them different. Amongst them was the white mangrove that helps filter the saltwater with their roots, this causes the salt deposits to form on the leaves. We were allowed to lick these leaves and they were indeed salty! There were also very interesting ferns that we typically don’t see in the city, such as the golden leather fern. We were provided two guidebooks — one for birds and one for smaller animals and plants, and we had so much fun spotting all the different creatures! After a full day of walking and learning, we ended it with a delicious dinner at the dock, overlooking the sea. A huge thank you to Nature Classroom and we hope to visit again soon!
