Last month, our producer, Pei Yen, flew all the way to India to attend two very special book events! She first visited the Chennai Book Fair, which is in it’s 49th edition of celebrating writers and promoting positive reading habits to all age levels. The event that was organised by Booksellers and Publishers Association of South India (BAPASI), initially began in 1977 with a small selection of booths but has now grown to become a widely-anticipated event featuring over 900 booksellers, publishers, and distributers. Together with the Selangor Library, Pei Yen proudly represented our Malaysian children’s literature scene and introduced our books to various international stakeholders. It was truly an amazing experience!
Next on the trip, Pei Yen also visited the Jaipur Literature Festival! This event is the largest, literary event in the world, and this year, it attracted over 400,000 visitors! From author discussions, dance performances, book launches, stand-up comedy, singing, painting, to fashion shows and markets — this festival had so much to offer and Pei Yen was astounded by the vibrancy of the culture and passion for the arts. It was truly eye-opening to witness how the event manages to capture reading and non-reading audiences to participate in a literary event by not only inviting international and locally renowned writers, but also diversifying their line-up to tailor to all curious audiences.
A huge thank you to Selangor Library for inviting us on this wonderful trip and we hope that our Malaysian literary scene can continue to grow with positive influences like these!
